Most of us love a good avocado, the perfect accompaniment to practically any meal – at any time of the day. What we most definitely don’t love however is waiting (sort of patiently) for them to ripen. Well you’re in luck because we have a solution – a way to speed up the ripening process!
You will need:
A baking tray
Preheat your oven to 200 °F/ 93 °C/ Gas Mark ¼
Wrap your avocado in some tin foil, covering it well and place it on the baking tray.
Put the tray back in the oven and leave your avocado there for about 10 minutes (this will depend on your oven and how tough the avocado was before it went in).
Remove the avocado from the oven and allow it to cool down before you enjoy.
Remember: Be to very careful when removing the tinfoil as hot steam can cause a nasty burn!
So how does it work?
Well … avocados release something called ethylene gas and this is what causes them to ripen in the first place. Normally this gas is released slowly allowing the avocado to naturally ripen, but wrapping it in tinfoil means the gas gets trapped and the process speeds up – dramatically.
