Bernadette McCarthy’s Love on the Line

Bernadette McCarthy is a woman of many trades, being a film/TV writer, director, producer and actor. The Dublin native had her own feature film Love on The Line debut on RTE 1, last December and now available on RTE player.

“My passion for movies goes back to my childhood growing up in Dublin. I was a bit of a night owl, insomniac so my poor mother exhausted from trying to get me to go back into bed late at night when I couldn’t sleep, eventually caved and just let me stay up. So many nights we ended up watching wonderful old classic films together.”

“Love on Line is an uplifting film with multiple story lines and themes, that celebrate love, life and hope.  I think it is particularly relevant right now, as people have reevaluated what is most important to them during lockdown.  I think people are prioritizing relationships, love and the need to connect.  Ways to connect online through Zoom, Facetime and online dating, have grown exponentially during the pandemic.”

In the last five years, UK and Ireland less than 15% of feature films were written and directed by a woman and less than 9% are produced by a woman. I asked Bernadette on her thoughts about the above statistics.

Bernadette shares her advice to young females who may want to pursue a career in film and television production.

“For me it is important to just persevere and not be daunted by fear.  To be willing to learn, study and gain wisdom at every stage and to get input from good mentors. I try to surround myself with people who are smarter and more experienced than I am, so they can guide me and tell me about the things, I don’t know.  Especially the things, I don’t even know, I don’t know yet. Mentors are those rare, precious gem people, who are generous with their knowledge and experience and who give feely of that. When you find one of those, you are blessed indeed.”
