We question... Blaithin Carney

What is your first memory?
Sitting up on my Dad’s lap playing the piano. I use the term “playing” very loosely here, as it was probably more like banging, as all toddlers like to do.

The last thing you think about before falling asleep?
I am an avid reader and I love to read a good book at bedtime. Generally, whatever I have been reading I begin ruminating over before I sleep. Currently, I’m reading Eleanor Roosevelt “You learn by living”. She has incredible wisdom and is a very inspiring woman in history. “Women are like teabags. You don’t know how strong they are until you put them in hot water.”-Eleanor Roosevelt. So true!

Who is the most interesting person you ever met?
I had the pleasure and privilege of being friends with the late Sir Paul Holmes. He was a very renowned broadcaster from New Zealand. We became great friends and wrote some songs together. Paul was a fascinating person who lived an incredible life and had a wit as sharp as any. He had the most irreverent sense of humour! I would literally be crying with laughter every time we spoke.

Have you ever been in love?
Yes! My one great and true love is my husband. Always and forever.

Who would be your ideal dinner guest?
My ideal dinner guests are my friends. They are all hilarious and amazing women.

Happiness is….
Hearing my children's laughter. A real big belly laugh where they can’t even speak they’re laughing so much. There’s no sound that compares to that.

Who do you love?
My family. Times infinity.

What could you not live without?
My beloved piano and books. Yes, I am a super-nerd at heart.

Tell us a secret?
Embarking on this career of song-writing and performing was terrifying. I don’t think anyone knew how scared I was of failing. Thankfully I pushed through the fear and did it anyway.

Why are we here?
Who knows?! To love and be loved is a good place to start though.

What’s your greatest vice?
I have no vices. Hahahahaha…where do I even begin? Wine, chocolate, crisps…you get the drift.

You are inspired by?
The people closest to me. My parents are amazing and have always inspired me with their work ethic. My children inspire me daily. Those little minds and hearts are incredible. They see such beauty in the world still, so I like to look at things through those rose-coloured lenses sometimes.

The song you’re most likely to sing at Karaoke is…?
You’re so vain by Carly Simon.

What’s your guiltiest pleasure?
Lying in bed with a coffee reading the paper on a Sunday morning. It rarely happens these days, but when it does…. heaven.

What is your happiest memory?
Thankfully, I have a lot of them! One of my most recent ones was performing one of my own songs at the National Concert Hall. That was immensely cool.

Where is your favourite place in the whole world?

The movie you could watch again and again?
The Princess Bride. It’s so good!

What makes you angry?
Lack of respect for people and our planet. We are only here a short time. Let’s show some kindness to each other.

What you like to be remembered for?
Deep question…I would like to be remembered as a good mum who also wrote some amazing music!

What are you working on right now?
I’m rehearsing for a gig in Whelan’s on May 24. I am also continually writing new music and learning guitar for the craic… sure why not?!
