Wellness Wednesday: How to shift a bad mood

Have you ever noticed that when you’re in a bad mood nothing seems to go right? No one enjoys being in a bad mood and often it can be hard to take ourselves out of a negativity spiral. If you’re currently stuck in that awful-feeling place, here are some simple tips that can help you to shake it off and get back to feeling good.

 

Take three… Ways to shift a bad mood

1. Ask yourself a question – When you’re in that bad feeling place it can be hard to focus on anything other than the thing that put you in said bad mood in the first place, but if you can, take a deep breath and ask yourself the following question: What would genuinely make me feel better? Listen closely to your own response. You may find that sitting down with a cup of tea is enough to get you smiling again or maybe, deep down, you’re upset because you’re overworked so you give yourself permission to take a day off. We have to be our own best friends and care for ourselves so do whatever you need to help yourself.

2. Watch something funny – There are very few bad moods that a funny video on YouTube or your favourite comedy can’t fix. Actively seek out reasons to laugh. Laughter releases feel good hormones which can help to dissolve even the worst mood.

3. Move your body – Whether it’s an angry session in the gym or a simple walk outside, moving your body is an easy way to shift your mood. Movement will help to release endorphins into your bloodstream which in turn, should leave you feeling uplifted. To feel even better, try exercising outdoors where you’ll also have the added benefit of time in nature.
