Playing with patterns and tactile texture and textiles are a great way to add interest to interior design and fashion. Texture, that we can touch or perceive, adds personality to a neutral living space creating mood and depth. Sometimes the clever use of design tricks the eye with an implied visual texture of plushiness, reflection or translucency. Faux finished illusionary texture almost makes you want to reach out and touch to see if the simulated surface feels like you believe it should be. Clever use of colour and design can create realistic effects such as marble, wood, stone or silk.
It’s fun to introduce interesting textures and patterns to the home pallette like geometric cushions, household objects with undulating surfaces, walls with reflective, metallic finishes, 3D rugs, filigree candle holders or natural textured materials like jute, wicker or rush. Light bounces off uneven surfaces throughout the day making interesting shadows, radiance and highlights. Use it judiciously in smaller rooms to create the illusion of space and choose harmonious textures that co-ordinate with the mood and style of furnishings.
